Viltrox AF 85mm F1.4 Pro Z review: what the published specs commit to

On the published numbers this is a heavy, conventional fast eighty-five: 835 grams and 15 elements in 11 groups against 360 grams for Viltrox's own F2.0 EVO. The F1.4 aperture, 11 blades and a VCM focus motor are what the extra weight and $323 buy.

Buy it if
You shoot Nikon Z portraits, already carry a 77 mm filter set, and want the widest aperture and highest blade count Viltrox publishes at this focal length.

Weight decides your kit. Viltrox’s own AF 85mm F2.0 EVO Z is 475 g lighter and $323 cheaper for the same focal length and the same 0.13x maximum magnification.
What the optical specification says
Viltrox lists 15 elements in 11 groups, and breaks that down on the same page as 3 ED, 9 HR and 1 UA element, with an HD nano multi-coating. ED elements are specified to control chromatic aberration; the UA element is Viltrox’s ultra-precision aspherical, which the company says suppresses onion-ring bokeh.
That is a denser construction than either comparison lens carries. Viltrox’s own F2.0 EVO Z is 10 elements in 7 groups, and Nikon publishes 12 elements in 8 groups for the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S.
- 11 diaphragm blades — two more than the nine both comparison lenses use. Blade count sets the shape of out-of-focus highlights when the lens is stopped down; it says nothing about rendering wide open, where the aperture is round regardless.
- 0.13x maximum magnification at 0.79 m — identical reproduction to the F2.0 EVO Z despite the EVO focusing 50 mm closer, which follows from the Pro’s longer optical path.
Does the element count tell you how sharp it is?
No, and it is worth being plain about that. Element and group counts describe what the designer chose to spend, not what the lens resolves. Viltrox publishes no MTF chart for this lens, so there is no manufacturer-supplied resolution figure here to compare against Nikon’s, which does publish MTF data for the S-line.

Build, sealing and controls
Viltrox describes a full metal body with high-grade dust seals, a splash-resistant design, and water- and smudge-resistant coatings. The product page also lists a click/de-click aperture switch, customisable function buttons, an AF/MF switch, and settings exposed through the Viltrox Lens app.
How reliable is the “all-weather” claim?
It is a claim without a number. Viltrox states sealing in prose and publishes no IP rating, so it cannot be placed on the same scale as a rated body or lens. That gap is recorded as TODO: verify in the spec table rather than filled with a figure from somewhere else.
Which weight figure is right?
Viltrox publishes two. The Specs tab reads ≈835 g (bare lens); a feature panel lower on the same page says “Weighing approximately 800g”. The spec table figure is the one carried through this review and the comparison, and the 35 g discrepancy is left visible rather than averaged away.
Autofocus hardware
The Pro uses what Viltrox calls a dual HyperVCM motor, listed simply as VCM in the spec tab, with an internal focusing system. The F2.0 EVO Z uses STM plus a lead screw. Voice-coil designs are generally specified for higher-torque, faster movement of heavier groups, which is consistent with a 15-element optical block.
What none of that establishes is focus accuracy, tracking behaviour on a specific body, or firmware maturity — none of which Viltrox publishes and none of which PickBadger has tested.

How much heavier is it than Viltrox's own F2.0 EVO Z? +–
Viltrox lists the F1.4 Pro at approximately 835 g bare and the AF 85mm F2.0 EVO Z at approximately 360 g, a difference of 475 g at the same focal length. The Pro is also longer and wider, at Φ84.5 by 110.6 mm against Φ69 by 78 mm for the EVO.
What filter size does the AF 85mm F1.4 Pro Z take? +–
Viltrox lists a Φ77 mm filter thread. That is larger than the Φ58 mm on its own F2.0 EVO Z and the 67 mm Nikon specifies for the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S, so an existing filter set almost certainly will not fit without step-up rings. Budget for that.
Is the lens weather sealed? +–
Viltrox describes an all-weather-sealed build with dust seals and water-resistant coatings on the product page. It publishes no IP rating or equivalent standard against that claim, so there is no figure to compare with another maker. Treat the sealing as unrated until Viltrox states a number.
How close does it focus, and how large does that render a subject? +–
The listed minimum focusing distance is 0.79 m with a maximum magnification of 0.13x. That is the same reproduction ratio Viltrox gives for the F2.0 EVO Z, which focuses marginally closer at 0.74 m, and slightly higher than the 0.12x Nikon publishes for its 85mm f/1.8 S.
The bottom line
On published figures the AF 85mm F1.4 Pro Z buys one stop, two extra diaphragm blades and a denser optical block for 475 g and $323 over Viltrox’s own F2.0 EVO Z, and undercuts Nikon’s 85mm f/1.8 S by $201.95 while weighing 365 g more than it. Whether that trade is worth making is a judgement about handling and rendering that no specification sheet settles, and PickBadger has not assessed this lens in use.
